Who Needs Commercial Air Cleaners?

We all know about air pollution — from factory and power plant emissions and automobile exhaust. But did you know that the air you breathe inside is typically three to five times dirtier than the air outside? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that indoor air pollution is the nation’s number one environmental health concern. Hazardous chemical vapors are a major contaminant indoors, and new airtight building practices only exacerbate the accumulation of toxic gasses inside. But there are steps you can take to minimize chemical exposure in your business or home.

The first step is identifying just where all these inside chemical gasses originate. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a family of chemicals that vaporize at room temperature, are present in many widely used household products: pesticides, cleansing solvents, cosmetics, deodorizers, paint and tobacco smoke. And VOCs are also found in a variety of building materials, as well as furnishings: cabinetry components (particularly composite woods), architectural trim, carpeting, furniture, mattresses, even silk plants.

Airborne vapors from VOCs, like formaldehyde, benzene, chlorine and sulfuric acid, can have both short and long-term health effects if inhaled for extended periods, particularly for those most vulnerable — young children, asthma sufferers and the elderly. Short-term ailments range from headaches and coughs to dizziness and nausea. Long-term exposure can lead to respiratory disorders, heart disease and cancer. The EPA estimates that Americans spend 80% or more of their lives indoors, so reducing VOCs right under your nose, so to speak, can have a significant positive health benefits. 

A Breath of Fresh Air

While eliminating and reducing the sources are the first safeguard against hazardous chemical emissions indoors, there is still more you can do to minimize you and your employees’ exposure. There are a number of different technologies for stripping harmful substances from the air inside your home. Room units can be very effective in eliminating VOCs from specific areas and in-duct systems can provide whole-building filtration.

Air cleaning systems using HEPA filters (high efficiency particulate arrestors) are extremely effective at capturing microscopic respirable particulate down to .3 microns (a human hair is approximately 100 microns in diameter). HEPA filters are often combined with other filter media (such as activated carbon, alumia potassium permanganate and zeolite) for capturing even smaller gaseous VOCs. The volume of air circulated by these units (typically expressed as cubic feet per minute or CFM), along with the amount of filter media impact their effectiveness.

Electronic air cleaners are composed of electrostatic surfaces which act like magnets to attract positively charged airborne particles to their negatively charged surfaces, like the static charge that causes clothes to cling together in the dryer. Ultraviolet light is used in Biozone Ionic air purifiers to excite ambient gases that can act to break down airborne organic contaminants. Biofiltration systems, or so-called living air cleaners, employ microbial enzymes to break down VOCs into non-harmful compounds.
